Floods
-The most frequent natural disaster in Canada
-can cause sewage to contaminate bodies of water that pollutes the water and kills marine life.
-also can drown plants and animals to the point of death
-may cause erosion that in tern cause landslides

Ice Storm
-Occur in all parts of Canada and can cause serious damage to trees.
-Trees split and twist due to the weight of the ice.
-Animals can starve if they can not access their food beneath the ice.
-Storm affects large geographic areas. Power outages can effect entire Provinces.
-After the storm: less shade due to the tree canopy being destroyed, which keeps temperatures higher.
-Less leaves producing oxygen for everyone to breathe.
-Power outages due to downed lines cause dangerous situations and difficulty heating our homes.
- Economic damage significant due to the loss of businesses being able to operate.
-Ice storm in Toronto winter 2013, costed $275 million

Land Slide
-Landslides are caused by erosion and ground water conditions, intense rainfall or rapid snow melt.
-Landslides happen anywhere there is a slope and the right conditions
-Human construction activity cause a large number of landslides.
-January 9, 1965 in Johnson Peak, British Columbia a landslide caused four deaths. There are more deaths from landslides than earthquakes or flooding in BC.
-After the slide: shifting earth very difficult, and costly.

Volcanic Eruption
-Volcano eruptions happen is areas with volcanoes.
-Volcanoes effects the climate with a decrease in temperature a year or two after eruption.
-Animals such as livestock and other mammals are killed by lava flow, atmospheric effects, and gases.
-Plants are killed over a wide ranging area during an eruption.
-Volcanoes can knock down forests and clog rivers with volcanic ash
-gas from the magma in volcanoes are released into the air and can contain carbon dioxide
-carbon dioxide from a volcano can build up at the bottom of lakes.

Drought
-Droughts are one of the most severe natural disasters and lead to severe consequences.
- Without water nothing will grow, animals and humans can not survive.
- Water is one of the fundamental elements of survival, without it all life forms will die.
-Sustained droughts throughout the Praries are not uncommon. In the early 2000s there were multi year droughts in western Canada.

Wild Fires
Weather plays a major role in how many wild fires there are in a year, drought leads to favorable conditions and wind makes it travel.
-a wildfire can spread at a rate of 23 kilometres an hour.
-caused by lightning strikes, and heat from the sun, but usually human carelessness.
-300 degrees Celcius is the temperature that will start wood to burn.
There are 9000 wild fires per year in Canada.
-After a fire: need to minimize erosion and how it effects aquatic systems, need to retain as much forest structure as possible for wildlife, capture the economic value of burned wood, minimize the insect outbreak on fire stressed trees.
-Slave Lake, Alberta May 15, 2011 $1.8 billion in damages

Tornado
-Tornadoes can demolish entire forests and leave cycloidal marks on the ground, it can take years for habitats to recover
-Loss of habitats due to tornadoes cause animals to die
-Tornadoes kill all plants and animals in its path if it is strong enough.
-On average Canada gets 62 per year. April and May are the most active months. Saskatchewan averages 18 per year.
- Rating is by the EF Scale (0-5) 5 being the most severe. 60 km - 500 km per hour
- Extremely destructive but generally localized areas are effected not large areas.
-July 31 1987, $597 million in damages

Hurricane
-Occur in the North Atlantic Ocean or the North East Pacific Ocean and remains east of the international date line.
In 2003 hurricane Juan hit Halifax Nova Scotia causing major damage along the coast.
Hundreds of trees were destroyed in Point Pleasant Park. It will take years for the park to recover.
-Hurricanes can destroy habitat for animals, uproot plants through high winds, and cause serious damage to coastal ecosystems and aquatic life.
-Hurricanes are like many disasters becoming more frequent and more powerful due to climate change. The temperature of the ocean plays a major role in the strength of the hurricane.

Earthquake
-Earthquakes occur along fault lines due to shifting plates.
- Can cause Tsunami and landslides
-effects animals by falling rubble from buildings.
-effects plants by disrupting the soil so the roots are exposed
